Walking in Rogaland

There are some classic walks in the Stavanger area. I've included the most memorable - click the map or scroll down to see details.

Stavanger

There are some lovely short walks in Stavanger itself.

Mosvatnet and Stokkavatnet

Both are short strolls round lakes just outside the city centre. Popular with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers.

Ullandhaug

A hilly forested area about 6 km from the city centre. There are several walking tracks through the forest and botanic garden and to the tower at the top of the hill. It's also a good area for cross-country skiing or sledging in the winter.

Dalsnuten

North of Sandnes and on the opposite side of Gandsfjord from Stavanger, the village of Dale marks the start of a few walks. The most popular is a short but steep walk to the summit of Dalsnuten which overlooks Stavanger. It's also possible to link several peaks to make a day hike.

Månafossen

A short steep hike to a waterfall; impressive in late spring/early summer after lots of rain, but beautiful in winter when everything freezes into amazing patterns. The walk is very slippery then though.

Prekestolen

Probably the busiest walk in Rogaland, but for good reason. About three hours there and back, the path leads to a rock "pulpit" dramatically overhanging Lysefjord, 600 m below.

Kjerag

A more challenging walk than Prekestolen and even more dramatic. 1000 m directly above Lysefjord a boulder is wedged into a narrow crack. It's possible to walk out onto the boulder and pose for pictures with only a couple of metres of rock supporting you above the 1 km drop. This is also a popular base jumping site.
