IRB Sevens at Twickenham

4th June 2005

Eight of us enjoyed a full Saturday of rugby at Twickenham. Niall and I started at 8.15 am in a pub near Victoria watching the Bay of Plenty lose 34-20 to the Lions. By lunchtime we were all tucked up at the bottom of the West stand chatting, drinking beer and cheering on our favourite Sevens teams.

Matt, Lorraine, Nicky, Titch and Cherée all showed up in white shirts. Niall and I wore black and Nick joined us in support of the Kiwi teams, wearing a Blues shirt. After labelling Niall a traitor for not wearing green (despite the fact Ireland weren't playing), Matt suspiciously switched allegiance near the end of the day by wearing his newly purchased Jonah jumper. Maybe he was just cold.

The Sevens games kept us entertained all afternoon. New Zealand and South Africa made winning look very easy; Fiji got the crowd behind them with consistently brilliant running, but perhaps most popular of all were the Kenyan team. Their dancing, singing, smiling supporters kept the whole crowd cheering for their side all day.

The evening's Johnson v Jonah game was fittingly close, good humoured and exciting to watch, especially with so many legendary players on the pitch at the same time. Johnson's team won 33-29.
