Houston House 3
The renovation phase. We decided to move some doorways around to improve the flow of the house.
The kitchen doorway is being widened to feel more open-plan with the dining room and the old kitchen has been gutted, including removing sheetrock and wood panelling from the brick chimney.
The small extension at the back of the dining room (which we're calling the sunroom) is having a new, wider doorway which lines up with the doorway between the dining room and front room. During this process the house's original wallpaper was exposed; fabric-backed and hung directly on the wood-panelled wall then covered over later with layers of paint and finally sheetrock.
The front room is being split back into two rooms. Originally wide pocket doors would have separated the front parlour from the back parlour. This doesn't work too well today as no-one has a parlour any more, so we're creating a separate study and opening a hall from the porch into the living room.
Our own project while the builders are in demolishing the rest of the house is to remove the dozens of layers of paint from some of the house's woodwork, starting with the stair banister and fireplace. This may take some time.
