Golden Bay

North of Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park, Golden Bay is long, sandy and only accessible by a twisty drive over Takaka hill. The drive doesn't seem to deter people and Abel Tasman in particular is packed full of trampers and day-trippers throughout the summer. Further north is quite a bit quieter and the beaches are still beautiful.

We liked the peaceful atmosphere and the gravel roads north of Golden Bay really gave the illusion of being off the tourist track. The surfing seals were also great entertainment.

Highlights

Wharariki beach

A beautiful beach, miles of rippling dunes and seals surfing and waving from the water or posing on the wet sand.

Farewell Spit

A vast expanse of sand. The near end is crossed by walking tracks like the walk to Fossil Point to see stacked shell assemblages and trace fossils. The seaward end is open only to organised 4WD tours.

Eating

Mussel Inn

Good food; very lively, "alternative" crowd.

Sleeping

Golden Bay Lodge and Gardens

A lovely setting with gorgeous views over the bay and out to Farewell Spit in the distance.
