Banks Peninsula

The drive across the Canterbury plains up the east coast isn't the most picturesque part of the South Island, but Banks Peninsula makes up for it. We stayed in Akaroa, which is lovely. Along the way we stopped for a walk and to fossick for agate on Birdlings Flat, then had a great snack in a little coffee shop on the main Christchurch to Akaroa road at Taitapu. The cake was particularly good.

Highlights

Swimming with dolphins

Despite the cold water and low visibility we loved getting really close to Hectors dolphins just out of Akaroa's harbour. Seeing them race past underwater was quite incredible, although you actually see greater numbers of dolphins from the boat than you do swimming. Best for confident swimmers.

Browsing the tourist shops

Definitely more up-market than tat. Plenty of paua, jade and other gemstone jewellery and one shop with beautiful blown glass ornaments.

Drinking coffee

On the harbour front and enjoying the beautiful views.

Eating

Plenty of choice.

L'Hotel

Good food but very slow service.

Sleeping

French Cottage

A short walk up the hill from town. Pretty and adequate. There are lots of hotels and B&Bs to choose from.

Photos

I think we were enjoying mooching about too much to remember to take out a camera. Not one of us took a single photo on Banks Peninsula!
